This year, NRCC’s Great Expectations Program is celebrating 11 years of serving our area foster youth! Great Expectations has made significant progress assisting foster youth as they transition from foster care to independent life as an adult. But there is still much more work to do.
Every year, more than 23,000 children in the U.S., including hundreds of foster youth in the New River Valley, turn 18 and age out of the foster care system. These children often have nowhere to turn and struggle to successfully navigate the gap in services. Some foster youth even find themselves suddenly homeless and without resources or assistance of any kind.
NRCC’s Great Expectations program offers support in the form of mentorship, career counseling, connections, and financial support to help remove obstacles that can keep these foster youth from becoming successful, productive, and gainfully employed adults. NRCC is here to guide them as they navigate the higher education system if they wish to attend college or with GED/HSE diplomas if they have not completed high school. NRCC also offers short-term workforce readiness classes, such NRCC’s FastForward programs, for specific job-ready credentials. We ask for your continued support for this essential program as we move into the next decade.
