I started with the Community Foundation of the NRV in 2005 reading grant applications. I've lost count of how many applications I've read or how many great projects we've turned down because we didn't have the money. It's easy to think that our small foundation can't do much to address the NRV's major challenges. It's easy to see the modest grants we've given as simply the best we can do right now. Fortunately, the CFNRV doesn't do "easy".
Why I give to The Fund for the NRV!
The CFNRV has a long track record of pulling people and organizations together around common challenges. But, we haven't been able to invest grant money in the ideas that come from those gatherings because our endowed funds are restricted in their purpose. Enter The Fund for the NRV.
We launched the Fund in 2015 to give us more flexibility to invest our staff time and energy into supporting collaboration and to invest grant money in projects that come from collaboration. We've done some pretty amazing things with the Fund in just two years and our money has leveraged over $10 million in additional public and private investment.
Sounds good, but what exactly has the Fund supported?
Glad you asked. With the help of dozens of partners, we've used the Fund to:
Provide home modifications of up to $5,000 to help low-income seniors stay in their homes as they age
Form the Food Access Network, a group of over 40 hunger relief agencies sharing resources and developing ways to better distribute nutritious food to people in need.
Plus, the Fund supports ongoing programs and tools to build the capacity of NRV nonprofits to pursue their missions effectively, including this website - GiveBigNRV!
I give to The Fund for the NRV because, in 12 years with the CFNRV, it has done the most good for the most people in our community, and it has supported projects that address the root causes of the challenges we face. It is truly an investment in the community where I have chosen to raise my family and call home.
