The Blacksburg Farmers Market started accepting SNAP benefits in the summer of 2011. In July 2012 the Blacksburg Farmers Market launched the SNAP Double Value Program. Since the inception of the program we have enrolled Over 300 households at the Blacksburg Farmers Market.
In 2015 we received a 3-year federal grant to help us improve and grow this grassroots program. Our grant funding ended in March of this year. Therefore it is the perfect time to become a part of it! With your help we are certain that we can continue to match SNAP customers’ benefits and can focus on enrolling more people in our program.
The Blacksburg Farmers Market is committed to ensuring that all members of our community, including those who are food insecure, can enjoy the benefits of eating fresh, locally-produced food.
◦ The increased value of their SNAP dollars helps break down barriers created by the perception that farmers markets are beyond their reach.
◦ Incentive programs generate true economic stimulus by keeping nutrition benefit funds within local communities, supporting local farms.
◦ Since its inception, the Blacksburg Farmers Market SNAP Double Value Program has provided about $55,000 of local produce to low-income customers. That money is passed directly on to farmers in our community.
Currently, we are offering a doubling value for up to $30 per person per market. For example, a SNAP shopper can come to the market, swipe $30 off their SNAP card, and receive an additional $30 in tokens to shop at the Farmers Market. Customers can take advantage of this match in funds up to 2 times per week at both the Wednesday and Saturday markets!
Based on the program’s growth in participation, we anticipate needing an additional $7,000 over the next year to continue to provide this service to a potential 300+ families and individuals.
