Over forty years ago —in 1971— Blacksburg saw a group of parents and teachers collaborate on a new way to educate children. The "New" School was a cooperative school. It was designed to challenge the status quo of the educational system and change many of the conventions of everyday school life.

Today, Blacksburg New School (BNS) continues this tradition by respecting innovation, collaboration, and small class sizes. Its experienced and highly skilled teachers truly enjoy the challenges of teaching. And like in its earliest days as a school, Blacksburg New School continues to push the boundaries of quality education through a one-of-a-kind partnership between parents and teachers.

We offer small, engaging classrooms and a nurturing, safe, and accepting environment for our students. We have a dynamic curriculum that includes regular classes in Art, Spanish, PE, and Music at every grade level, K-8. We also strive to nurture in our students a strong commitment to civic excellence and community responsibility through regular service projects and participation in community fairs and festivals.

BNS instills in each child the desire to learn by:

- letting each child progress at his/her own rate using positive reinforcement.
- emphasizing how to work with one another and to enjoy each other's talents.
- stressing development of critical thinking and inquiry rather than rote learning.
- having parents participate in school activities and participate in the daily running of the school.
- avoiding competitive, racist, or sexist mindsets.
- making school work a challenge, not a frustration.
- giving students and teachers the opportunity to set goals, develop projects, and evaluate them jointly.
- encourage the mixing of age levels within the school so that children can help one another.
- stressing that with freedom comes responsibility, both to oneself and to others.

BNS wants to promote self-knowledge and growth by aiding each student to:

- respect oneself and others, both in language and behavior.
- learn self-discipline and take responsibility for one's own actions.
- maintain a cooperative approach.
- develop a spirit of service-mindedness by helping others and being patient.
- learn to concentrate.
- listen to and understand what others say and feel.
- consider situations from the perspectives of others.
- learn to focus on one's needs, feelings, and goals.
- learn to show feelings in appropriate ways.
- respect property and treat the environment with care.
- witness the importance of family involvement in education.

Blacksburg New School's ideals make it a place where a spirit of cooperation reigns; where students, teachers, and parents respect one other; where academic excellence becomes a personal goal; where creativity is nurtured; and where education is an awakening process.
