From its calm and tranquil headwaters in North Carolina through the rural heartland of Virginia to the untamed narrows of West Virginia's mountain gorge, the New can be disarmingly inviting or defiantly challenging.
To date, we have recruited 6,993 volunteers to remove 467,600 pounds of trash, including14,482 tires. In Virginia alone, we have organized 36 events, partnering with New River Trail State Park, Giles County, Grayson County, City of Radford, Friends of Claytor Lake, New River Wildlife Club and multiple outfitters to clean up 186.5 miles of river with 2,671 volunteers removing 123,270 pounds of trash including 4,058 tires since 2006.
New River Conservancy has completed 100 miles of restoration to degraded stream and riverbanks enhancing 606 acres of habitat providing a healthy riparian buffer.
New River Water Watchers is a volunteer citizen science water quality monitoring program operating under state approved quality control and assurance plans approved in NC and VA.
