The agency provides a valuable service by addressing the needs of homeless families with children throughout the New River Valley. NRFS takes families from being literally homeless, to regaining stability in permanent housing. When a family facing a housing crisis presents to NRFS, they are screened for NRFS services and referred to other services as appropriate. As space is available, a homeless family is provided shelter in one of NRFS's five scatter shelter sites. NRFS provides a private, supportive environment for a family to recover from a housing crisis. When the immediate need of shelter is eliminated by being housed, a family, with the assistance of NRFS case management service, is afforded the time, direction, and support to address the issues that led to their homelessness and concentrate on specific housing barriers (employment, transportation, credit rating etc.). A goal of the agency is for families to connect to programs and develop skills to assist with finding and maintaining permanent housing.
