The June Bug Center for Arts & Education is a place for the community and our children. We host classes for adults during the day including, Floyd County High School Alternative Education Program, Acupuncture and a Chiropractor on a sliding scale, acudetox, yoga, exercise classes and recovery support groups. The JBC is also the home for the Floyd Community Theatre Guild and their wonderful productions!
Children are able to come to the JBC after school on the bus from all Elementary schools in the county. It is our goal to provide a program Mon-Fri and no child is ever turned away. Over half of the 100 plus students who attend classes at the JBC are economically disadvantaged.
Just $10 sponsors and feeds a child for a week.
The classes after school include:
Monday: FloydJAMS (Junior Appalachian Musicians), students can choose an instrument (guitar, fiddle or banjo) and two hour instruction is given in groups along with enrichment activities. We provide the instruments and students can borrow them all semester!
The dance studio offers a separate class for beginner dance/yoga with a bilingual instructor.
Tuesday: LEGO Robotics
Wednesday: Blue Ridge Strings. The JBC has partnered with Virginia's Blue Ridge Music Festival to offer classical music instruction including, violin, cello and classical guitar through the Suzuki Training Method followed by different styles of musical enrichment.
Thursday: Acting Out, students 8-15 learn basics of acting, stage presence, portfolios, set building and perform at the end of each semester.
Friday: Free movie Friday! Students come and relax with popcorn and a drink, sit back and watch some of our favorite movies of all time!
We also have a computer lab opened to the community after school until 5:30pm Mon-Fri.
