The main focus of The June Bug Center is to provide affordable afterschool programs to the Floyd County area Monday through Friday. Thanks to community funding like this, we are able to offer free and reduced scholarships to low-income families to ensure that every child gets these opportunities and it helps us reduce the number of children that are home alone during afterschool hours.
In the Spring of 2018, The June Bug Center enrolled 71 students in the afterschool programs. 55 of those students were on the free or reduced tuition, which is 77% of our children. For the 2018 Fall semester, we were able to enroll 133 kids in our programs, with 110 of those children receiving a scholarship. That is 83% of our children.
Our programs include:
Floyd JAMs (Junior Appalachian Musicians) Old-time music in fiddle, banjo, and guitar and Yoga for Teens
Tuesdays:LEGO & Robotics Club
Wednesdays: Blue Ridge Strings Program (Classical Strings Program) and Computer Camp
Thursdays: Acting Out and Musical Theatre for Teens
Free Movie Friday- Students come afterschool and enjoy a movie, popcorn and a beverage on us!
The June Bug Center provides snacks and pizza for all afterschool programs. The programs are on a sliding scale based on household income, and bus transportation is available from all five schools in our district. Instruments are also provided for musical programs.
