The June Bug Center for Arts & Education is a place for the community and our children. We host classes for adults during the day including, Floyd County High School Alternative Education Program, Acupuncture and a Chiropractor on a sliding scale, acudetox, yoga, exercise classes and recovery support groups. The JBC is also the home for the Floyd Community Theatre Guild and their wonderful productions!
Children are able to come to the JBC after school on the bus from all Elementary schools in the county. It is our goal to provide a program Mon-Fri and no child is ever turned away. Over half of the 100 plus students who attend classes at the JBC are economically disadvantaged.
Just $10 sponsors and feeds a child for a week.
The classes after school include:
Monday: FloydJAMS (Junior Appalachian Musicians), students can choose an instrument (guitar, fiddle or banjo) and two hour instruction is given in groups along with enrichment activities. We provide the instruments and students can borrow them all semester!
The dance studio offers a separate class for beginner dance/yoga with a bilingual instructor.
Tuesday: Gymnastics and Parkour
Wednesday: Kung Fu, REAL Talk for teens, a support group for teens. They can come together and talk about issues and give each other advice on how to cope and learn tools for dealing with day to day stress.
Thursday: Kung Fu, Acting Out, students 8-15 learn basics of acting, stage presence, portfolios, set building and more.
Friday: Free movie Friday! Students come and relax with popcorn and a drink, sit back and watch some of our favorite movies of all time!
We also have a S.T.E.M. lab opened after school Mon-Fri and a LEGO Robotics club is offered one Saturday a month with hopes of growing and expanding to a camp this summer.
We are also excited to announce we have a Classical Strings Program beginning Fall semester 2017! We have partnered with VA Blue Ridge Music Festival to offer Classical Music instruction to Floyd students and surrounding areas.
