United Way of the New River Valley is a local, independently incorporated, volunteer governed organization. Our mission is to unite local people and resources to improve lives in the New River Valley.

United Way unites individual and corporate donations to achieve measurable, lasting results. Our organization is primarily known for funding 25 local partner organizations, but we also provide several direct service programs, and are a place for individuals and organizations to turn to when critical community needs arise in the New River Valley.

Each of our partner agencies and programs provide for   critical services to our community in one or more of our   impact areas of focus:
           Strengthening Families and Youth
           Promoting Self-Sufficiency
           Health and Crisis Intervention

Through the United Way community investment process, our partner organizations provide the community investment volunteer teams with a formal funding request, financial information, service numbers, and an in-depth look into the service their organization is providing to the New River Valley community. The community investment teams then distribute funding based on needs and impact. This volunteer driven program is critical to insure our United Way is a good guardian of the donations made by contributors and that donor gifts are used to impact the biggest needs of our community.

In addition to United Way's community investment funding to our partner agencies, our organization provides direct programs throughout our community. Below is a list of our programs:
VolunteerNRV is the Volunteer Center for the New River Valley. It connects non-profits and other groups utilizing volunteers with individuals and groups who want to volunteer their services.
Emergency Food & Shelter Program for the jurisdictions of Montgomery and Floyd Counties, and the City of Radford is administered by UWNRV. These funds go to programs specifically addressing emergency food and and shelter needs.
Information & Referral services are provided to citizens of the NRV who are in need of information, assistance, or help, but do not know who to call, how to access services, or eligibility criteria. Limited case management is provided when necessary.
Familywize prescription discount cards are distributed throughout our community by UWNRV through schools, medical offices, pharmacies, agencies, etc. which help families save on the high costs of prescription medication. Locally over $3 million has been saved by over 17,000 people who have used the card.
The Diaper Bank privides qualifying families with young children to diapers & wipes up to twice monthly.
Emergency Food Pantry/Emergency Need Drives are organized throughout the year for various partner charity needs & UWNRV’s own emergency food pantry.
Stuff the Bus helps qualifying children and youth be ready for the start of a new school year with a backpack of school supplies and confidence. Working with local businesses and individuals, school supplies are collected and distributed in Montgomery & Floyd counties, and the City of Radford. This is a summer program.
Holiday Meal Box Program is a collaborative effort with other local charities to provide local families with a Holiday dinner box filled with dinner essentials. This is both a Thanksgiving and Christmas program.
Toys from the Heart is a Christmas assistance program that allows parents experiencing an emergency to acquire Christmas gifts for their child/ren.
Elves United matches local churches, companies, or groups with qualifying families in need of major assistance due to a critical family emergency in the past year.  Each case if referred to UWNRV by a local DSS or other outreach agency who works closely with families.
Day of Caring is an annual event where volunteers gather from all over the New River Valley to do a one-day project at local charities.
